Week 56 - Manvel

Hey Fam!
That proposal video was awesome! I am still so excited about that!

Also, we were blessed with a huge Christmas miracle last night. Y., a young woman in the ward called us yesterday at like 6 and asked if we could come over and visit with her friend. We were like "Doooope Referral!" so we got in the car and drove up to Friendswood. Her friend was interested in talking about the church. Of course we happily obliged and answered all of the questions that she had. We also taught her a mix of the restoration and plan of salvation lessons. It was kind of all over the place, but that is because she had really good questions and those took us to different portions of the gospel of which we could bear testimony. We then talked to her about the Atonement of Jesus Christ. She had never heard of that before, so she was amazed that someone loved her enough to suffer for her and with her. (She is a 4th gen Catholic and has only ever been to mass like twice.) We asked her if she would let Christ step into her life to lift her burdens off of her shoulders by being baptized and she said YES! WOOOOO YEAH CHRISTMAS! Her name is B. and she texted us today to ask when the next time we would be able to teach her more would be. We are pretty stoked.
So uh... Christmas in Texas is a broken thing haha It was green and 80 DEGREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSS  It is December and I am trying not to scratch bug bites... WHAT THE DUMP
But seriously, Yesterday was probably the best Christmas that I have ever had! It was weird, warm, wet(humid), and wonderful!
I am really thankful for you all putting together such a great Christmas for me!
Love y'all!

Week 55 - Manvel

Hey Everybody,
So I guess my letters that I have been writing are not making it home... Oh well.  Sister Asplund in our District took pictures of us for our parents for #LIGHTtheWORLD I hope you like them.  Also here are some pictures from Elder McQueen :)

A thought for the week:
1 Nephi 15:11 Do ye not remember the things which the Lord hath said?—If ye will not harden your hearts, and ask me in faithbelieving that ye shall receive,
with diligence in keeping my commandments,
surely these things shall be made known unto you.
In this time of the year it is easy to forget to be grateful. It is also easy to let up on all of the commandments, like keeping the Sabbath day holy. I know that Christmas will be on a Sunday this year, I hope that all of you will remember to be diligent in keeping the commandments of the Lord.

Hey, my favorite Christmas hymn is Number 134 in Spanish. I don't know the number in English.
Far, Far Away on Judea's plains.

This week was pretty fun. Other than most of Friday I had a killer migraine.
On Monday we got our hair cut by a member. She was so cool about it, she did not even charge us!! she cut Elder Bird's hair first. He is still really new in the mission so the Spanish has not come quite yet. This member speaks no English and it was really hard for her to cut his hair without being able to speak to him. Then she cut Elder McQueen's hair. He is really good at Spanish and there were no problems. When I sat in the chair she asked me how I wanted my hair cut and I explained to her how I wanted it. She was taken aback that I could actually speak Spanish. She started asking me all sorts of questions, you know, how all hair stylists do. It was fun, we totally talked about the Gospel, about my family, about Utah and how going to the temple is a huge blessing! She also was shocked at how much hair I had. She said that my hair is thicker than most hispanics hair. hahahaha
Tuesday we ate Tamales. I AM SO SICK OF TAMALES. haha All hispanic people make tamales for Christmas and then they give them to the Missionaries. We had dinner tonight with Hno Z, guess what we ate. TA-freaking-MALES ugh. haha but we were very grateful for the food and the company.  He told us a bunch of stories from when he was a bishop in Mexico. He is a cool guy.
Wednesday we busqed apts all day. At one point in the day I was driving down Hwy 35 and Elder McQueen said, "That is colon hydrotherapy...... no thank you..." I almost died.
Thursday we weekly planned and taught a guy named J. D. He was cool. We knocked on his door and he came out shirtless. I am pretty sure we caught him at a bad time. haha
Friday was boring with my headache.
Saturday was also boring.
Yesterday was fun. we went to a methodist church where they were performing a big concert thing. We were ushers and we stood outside for two hours. It was like 40 degrees, windy and it was really humid. haha
Our investigators  are doing pretty well. J is chugging along. Slowly learning what we teach him. A was sick this week and we were not able to teach her.

We did find a new apartment.  We have to move everything we have. Elder Embody (moving coordinator) will help us with his big enclosed trailer. I do not have the address right now. It is not the nicest place, but it is the only place that would accept corporate leases. we should be moving on thursday, but we haven't heard back... I am not stressed at all. The mission is the most fun I have EVER had. I love it here! Even when it's hard.

I'm excited to talk to you on Christmas!!
See you soon,
Elder Grimes

I have a quick question... The scriptures say 'infirmities' a ton. It is way more fun to replace that with 'limpnesses'.  I guess that wasn't much of a question. still funny tho

Week 54 - Manvel

Hi Everyone,
I am doing really well.  I am staying in my area, but we will have to move to a new apartment. So do not send me anything to my current address. I am also keeping my second son and my cousin. (Elders Bird and McQueen) I love training.  Elder Bird is becoming a really powerful missionary really fast.
Our area is HUGE!!!!!  We have to move because most of our investigators are in Alvin and we live in Pearland. We only get 1300 miles a month that we can drive. We are planning on moving down to Alvin to be in the middle of the area. We cover Pearland, Friendswood, Hillcrest, Santa Fe, Liverpool, and everything in between.

This week was really awesome. We got four new investigators!   J. came to church yesterday!! He told us that he loved it. He goes to a Pentecostal church and he is all about the music.  All of our other investigators are doing fine.  A. is a mother seems really interested in being baptized.

I think it is super fun to "busq" (BOOSK) apartments. haha   Buscar is the spanish word for "to look for" we use that in English all the time.  We have found that almost nowhere does corporate leasing and the short time notice is really weighing on us. We are actually pretty scared but we know we will be fine.

Brig asked us if we are having FHE EVERY week and if we have family prayer EVERY day.  When we admitted that we do not make it every time , he sent the following.;)
I know it can be hard to always have FHE and Family Prayer but don't be ashamed!! That is why we have repentance. We learn from our mistakes, we change, and we do better.  Don't worry about a thing!  I invite you to follow the council you received at Stake Conference and act on the promptings that you had during that meeting.

I love you all, have a great week!

Week 53 - Manvel

Hi All,
This week was so much fun!  We had an exchange with Elder Holyoak. He is our district leader and he is super cool! He cannot speak Spanish, so Elder McQueen and I had to teach everything without a third. That was kind of nice for a change. Being in a trio is nice because we can get into the homes of single women, but at the same time, we cannot teach as well because we have to divy up the teaching between three people and the transitions are never as good as we want them to be. Our only investigator is slowing down but he did play La Bamba for us last night. It was funny. He played it on the guitar.

I got the Christmas decorations package, it  made me so happy!!!!!  The first thing I did was make the coconut rice. Then I ate it. haha I did not have a way to rinse the rice so I poured it into a clean sock and rinsed it that way.... #missionlife. It has been sustaining me for the last few days. Also, THE BROWNIES MADE MY ENTIRE EXISTENCE.
I wrote a letter in which I have explained all about the December stuff (Light the World). I hope you guys get it soon.  In the meantime here is my thankful "poster" for 2016.  There is nowhere near enough room on this one sheet of paper to fit all of the things that I am Thankful for, I figure this is a pretty good start though.  I propose we change the name of this list that we do each year from "We are thankful for" to  "We have been blessed with..."  I think that it would be fun to see how the list would change with a different theme to it. As long as we give thanks to our Father in Heaven, He will continue to bless us.  I promise that as we live with gratitude in our hearts we will be much happier.
I love you,
Elder Grimes

Week 52 - Manvel

Hi Everyone,
We had a fun and crazy week!
Tuesday, We helped a family build a shed. I will have to mail home my SD card. I used the other guys cameras to take pictures with it and they are all pretty awesome!!! The people who built the frame had no idea what they were doing. The front wall was 10 inches shorter than the back wall... it took four hours to try and put a floor in... So much fun though.
Wednesday, we tried to teach a whole bunch of our potentials, but none of them wanted to talk to us. Then we had dinner with the bishop and his family. They are such good people.
Thursday, we played soccer early in the morning until like noon. I am in terrible, terrible shape... lol (You'd think biking would have helped...) Then we had lunch with the bishop. It was fun, they had us over because they knew that we had nowhere to go.
Friday, we took the bishops son out to teach with us. Elder Bird and Erik went one way, and Elder McQueen and I went another way. It was a good way to cover a lot of ground. We visited like 6 members that day. two of them fed us. we got pizza and tortas. A torta is a sandwich the size of a basketball.
Saturday we helped the bishop put up his Christmas lights. Then our car wigged out and we had to make a journey into Sugarland to get a different car for a few days. We will go and pick up Maria in a few days (Maria Chevy de la Cruz - our car)  Oh, and I finished my thankful poster. I will be mailing it home for you to see tomorrow.
One thing that I learned this week is that you do not need to have material possessions to be happy. The family that we helped on Tuesday are the poorest family that I have ever seen in my whole life, but they are the happiest I have seen on my mission. They have nothing, but at the same time, they have everything. They are grateful for every single thing that they have. That one hit me really hard. I have taken a lot for granted in my life, but now that I can take a step back and think about how blessed I truly am, life is different. I do not want to get anything for Christmas. Just send me pictures of you guys giving service to someone else.  Promise me you will not send me anything.  I am really excited to go to church on Christmas!
Oh and Mom, We do not need a tree. that is just more stuff that will not fit in our tiny apartment. haha  You don't need to worry about me.  Just remember that the Lord is taking care of me while I am on loan for a while. You would not believe how much I have changed and how much I have learned. I could not have asked for an experience this life changing.

I'm excited for the package, I will watch like a thing that watches real good. haha
Wanna know something cool?  Hey, I have almost finished my first mission journal!!!
I have to go now
Love you all!!! Have a great week

Week 51 - Manvel

Hi Everyone,
I am doing so well!!!  My camera broke tho... I cannot take pictures anymore... haha.  To answer Mom, I do have a thankful chart going. I will send it home this week.  As far as Thanksgiving goes, I think we might be eating with the bishop... I am not sure though.  We might just eat in our apartment.
We have been cooking a whole bunch of food lately and it is so much fun!!  We make all kinds of random mixes.

This week was good.  We had splits on Tuesday because some Elders were sick, we got out and tried to teach people.  Wednesday we had Zone Conference.  On Thursday I was sick.  When you are sick, you sleep.  On Friday we had an awesome service project where we went to a trailer park and installed fire alarms for free. We worked with the Red Cross, it was cool.  On Sunday we had church ;) I love my new ward. They are so much fun!! Hermano G. (Grandpa) sat next to me and he kept trying to talk to me.  I had to work to not laugh the whole time.  It was awesome.  We have one solid investigator named J. and he is pretty dope.  He has a baptismal date for the 14th of January and we are stoked.

Look up Helaman 3:35. I have learned a lot about fasting and how much we can be blessed by fasting.
Helaman 3:35 Nevertheless they did fast and pray oft, and did wax stronger and stronger in their humility, and firmer and firmer in the faith of Christ, unto the filling their souls with joy and consolation, yea, even to the purifying and the sanctification of their hearts, which sanctification cometh because of their yielding their hearts unto God.

In Zone Conference this week we talked about #LIGHTtheWORLD.  Light the world is going to be a huge worldwide push in the church to provide service however we can. On the 25th of November the real video will launch and we can start getting ready to participate in the initiative.  The first 25 days of December will be days of service.  25 ways in 25 days I challenge everyone who reads the blog to participate.  I promise, as a representative of the Lord, Jesus Christ, that as you provide meaningful service to others YOU WILL FIND MORE JOY IN YOUR OWN LIFE.  You will find satisfaction at the end of the day.
I love you all!!!

Week 50- Manvel

This week has been so much fun!!!

I'm with Elder McQueen who is from Springville, Utah and Elder Bird who is from Idaho Falls, Idaho.

On Tuesday we rode bikes like 30 miles to visit some members, just to find out that they ordered us a pizza at the Papa Johns right next to our apt.. So we went and got the pizza and proceeded to eat it in the Subway next door.  Yes, we have a car, but biking is way more fun. Then on Wednesday we went to the Mission Office to have Elder Bird pass off the lessons, he is on his second transfer. The lessons are something all new missionaries have to do. It just helps them know how to teach effectively. It was a fun day.

I have been meeting members and trying to know where we are all the time, our area is huge!!! It covers Alvin, Santa Fe, Pearland and some other area really far south of where we live.  This area is so much more "me" than H2. Lots of country, also, we knocked and talked to the mayors wife the other day!!   #fearnoman
We also had Stake Conference yesterday. We got called to repentance hardcore. The Stake President said, "This is going to offend many of you, but the Lord has commanded me to say it, and I must obey." then he called out the stake for working on Sundays and watching sports on the Sabbath.  We are in a Spanish Ward and the work is slower here than H2. In the week that I have been here we have gotten a new investigator and an old one has accepted a date to be baptized.

Here's something funny,  both of my pillows disappeared during transfers.  I have been using a small fuzzy blanket instead... lol  Hey Mom, I might need some new pants.  As to my height and weight...Same old same old. I have not changed at all since I left. I can just speak Spanish now.  We have geckos EVERYWHERE in the new complex.  We have caught like 7 so far and I almost caught a squirrel the other day. They are super fat and slow here.

Sorry no pictures this week, this computer is a little sketchy.. I do not want to hook my camera up to it.  We are in a family history center and this computer is just super old.

I want you to read Mosiah 23:10
10 Nevertheless, after much tribulation, the Lord did hear my cries, and did answer my prayers, and has made me an instrument in his hands in bringing so many of you to a knowledge of his truth.
D&C 46:19-20
19 And again, to some it is given to have faith to be healed;
20 And to others it is given to have faith to heal.

I am feeling a ton better and being in a new place has made me so happy!

I love you guys!!!
Gotta go!

Week 49 - H2

Transfer News!
I'm being transferred to FW41 -Manvel Northeast District in the Friendswood Zone.  I have heard that the area is supa dope fire. Elder Huaraca came from there and says it is awesome!  I will be training Elders McQueen and Elder Bird and we will be living in Pearland, Texas.  Elder McQueen has been out as long as Elder Kennedy.  This is Elder Bird's second transfer.  Elder Kennedy is staying. I am flying solo from the squad.  To answer Mom's questions:  I haven't had time to get my haircut.  Yes, I voted.  No, I probably don't know how much you love me ;)
Lately I really like Doctrine and Covenants 68:6.  Read it and you will know why!  I went to the Zoo and the Temple this week.  It was a way fun week!  I loved everything about the Zoo.  On Wednesday we went to the Temple. It was such a cool experience. I did a family name and it made it that much more powerful. I did it all by myself!! I didn't need any help from the workers. Yeah memory!!  On Friday we had a great time working on a service project at Kolter Elementary.
Sorry so short, we are moving today and we will be super busy.

Week 48 - H2

Hi Family,
So last night we ate with the S. family and we had a mini testimony meeting. It was really neat. I shared my testimony about the family and how crucial it is to the Plan of Salvation. I took a few minutes to talk about each person in my family and how I miss you all. I also spoke about how much more I am coming to learn about all of you. Dad was so right, being away brings you so much closer to your family. I love you guys!! I love this ward too, we had a fund raiser for the Young Women so that they can all go on a camp out. That was a crazy morning. We woke up super early and went to a prairie restoration site that we are helping some members with. That was really fun!! We cleared so many different kinds of grasses. Elder Kennedy and Elder Grondel put on waders and got to clean out the pond. Sister S. did not tell them that there were pitfalls and quicksand in the pond. Elder Grondel fell in. It was so dang funny!!  She is doing really well. We have invited her to be baptized and she seemed really excited about it. We will have to hand her off to Grondel and Huaraca though. She says she wants to go to an English ward.

I did get the package!!! Thank you so much!! I LOVE CANDY lol  WE ARE GOING TO THE ZOO TODAY!  I was mistaken last week and we actually go to the temple THIS Wednesday.

Gotta go!!
Love you all!!!!!!!

Week 47 - H2

Hi Guys,
That picture of dad just killed me. That is the best thing ever!!!  Dad is totally me, I sleep in a hoodie almost every night! lol

C. is awesome!! We went over to teach her the other day and she had perfect questions that led to the next point of the lesson the whole time. It was cool.  All of our other investigators are pretty much the same as they have been. Not a lot of change this week.

This week was really hard. I had to make a BUNCH of phone calls. ugh, So much stress. haha it's all good though. Yes, we are still walking..... My back has been getting worse. I am pretty worried about it. I also have an appt with the oral surgeon on the 4th of November. Someone just make me better- haha  -Momma, I am doing great! You really don't need to worry. I just don't like making phone calls....that still hasn't changed.

Something to think about…..
Every great success requires some type of worthy struggle or sacrifice to get there.  Know this, when you are struggling (being put to the test or proved wherewith) that’s when you are growing. Developing skills and abilities that will bless you the rest of your life.
They don’t seem apparent now but as you look back on those times of struggles you will see the growth you made, the skills you now have and the abilities that carry you each day. The more struggles you have the more you will learn.  Don’t give up, pray them away or hide from them.

We are going to the Temple on Wednesday!  We are going to a history museum today and transfers are two weeks from today.  Mom reminded me that a year ago today I went through the Temple for the first time. WOOOO that is a pretty good day!

To answer Danny when he asked if there is anything you guys can do for me...Idk. Letters. Just letters. Letters are such a boost you guys have no idea.

I love you all!

Week 46.5 - H2

Side note from Momma Grimes: I've been off on the dates since the beginning when he sent 2 emails in one week at the MTC.  With this post being so late in the week I thought it was a good week to get back on track :)

Hi Fam,
As we were walking away from a pretty solid lesson with an unnamed investigator this week we were talking about what went well and what didn't go so well. We were trying to come up with ideas on how we could work in better unity when this lady sitting in her car flagged us down. So we walked over and introduced ourselves as her missionaries. (when in reality, we all know that I am Buffer's missionary) (Love ya Mommy!;) She asked us if we read the bible and which version. We told her that we use the King James version of the Bible and that we believe that it is a book of holy scripture. Then she asked what the "little blue book" was that we were both holding. Be prepared for the win!! So we introduced the Book of Mormon and told her what it is and how we have it. Then she asked what we think about the trinity. She expressed a lot of concern with differing ideas about it and wanted to know our beliefs. We told her that we believe in God, the eternal father and in his son, Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Ghost. Then she asked, "so are they all one?" Then I related the story of Christ being baptized in the Bible. Christ is there being baptized, John hears a voice from heaven, then the Holy Ghost descended upon Christ. She was like, "OH MY GOSH!!!!! THAT MAKES SO MUCH SENSE THAT THEY WOULD BE DIFFERENT PEOPLE!!!"
It was pretty cool!  We are gonna go and visit with her tomorrow!

To answer Mom, so my back is still pretty bad, we can't bike anymore and have to walk everywhere to strengthen my back.  5 of us are sharing 1 shower due to the hole I made in the other shower when I fell.  I haven't gotten my tooth fixed yet AND I got food poisoning the other day and was up all night in the bathroom.  I sound all negative nancy, but really I am having a great time and Loving every second of every sweaty day!!

That's cool that Gpa and Gma are going to be in San Antonio...tell them they should swing down to H-town and take me to lunch haha.

Elder Kennedy is great!  We are best friends. We have gotten to the point were we are mean to each other and then just laugh. We were up laughing and joking late last night.  He knows all about horses and with you guys getting into that it is fun to learn about.  So, we went boot shopping last week with Elder Grondel (one of the Elders that has the car) because he wanted to order some boots.  I learned something about myself. I LOVE BOOTS. haha This store that we went to was the coolest place that I have ever been. I want to live there. We have to go back, today I hope, to pick up his boots. I am really excited to go back!! Boot leather smells so good!  I'll take pictures of the place...oh, I forgot my camera today...sorry Mom!
Love you all!

Week 46 - H2

Missionary Down!!
So this week was one of service! We gave more than 30 hours of service this week! It was a really fun week! We were helping E. move a bunch of concrete stepping stones in his yard on Tuesday. We did that for like 3 hours. He had like a million of them. We had four elders there helping out. Me, E. Kennedy, E. Huaraca, and E. Grondel. We had a line going and I was at the end. I received the stones and placed them gently on pallets. I was arched over all day lifting heavy things. That screwed me up pretty bad. Then the next day in the shower I may or may not have slipped and fallen and sent my shoulder through the wall... That made my back even worse. I am such an old man... Then we helped move a few members and I had to carry this giant bookcase up like 6 flights of stairs and it was really heavy. I was all sorts of broken...but I am a little bit better and I have been managing everything pretty well.

I love training and Elder Kennedy is doing great!! He and I are like best buddies. We have a really good time together and it was great to have a week full of service.

Sorry I'm so short on time.
I love you all,
Elder Grimes

Week 45 - H2

Hey Framlee,
How did everyone enjoy conference??  Did you guys know that Brian K. Ashton was the president of the THSM before president Hall?  One of my favorite talks from this General Conference was given on Saturday morning by Carol F. McConkie. She posed a rather large question: When the Son of Man cometh, Will he find faith on the earth? This question hit me really hard because that is one of the main purposes of being a missionary. We invite others to come unto Christ by helping them receive the restored gospel through FAITH, repentance, Baptism, the receiving of the Gift of the Holy Ghost, and Enduring To The End. Do I have enough faith?  The answer will always be no. I need to strive constantly for the rest of my life to increase my faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. She talked a lot about Prayer and how we can engage all three members of the Godhead through prayer. If you think about it, that is a huge blessing to be able to do that.  One thing that really stuck with me is, "GOD NEEDS BRAVE SONS" And He needs them forever.

Another cool thing to think about, When Nephi was in the wilderness with his family he broke his bow. His brothers' bows lost their springs. They had no sure way to get food. So Nephi turned to the Lord and made a plan. He made himself a new bow, and an arrow. Verse 23 of 1 Nephi 16 says that Nephi made ONE ARROW. Talk about faith. Then he asked his father where he should go to find food.  Sometimes we should make our own plans and take them to our father in heaven. He will help us.

With President Nelsons talk I feel like finally someone understands.  He said that a missionary isn't out to baptize, a missionary is out to bring JOY to His children all over the world.

Here is how our investigators are doing.   I. and the boys are slowing down but everyone else is still chugging along. A. is being awesome still, he just gets it. E. is a young mother and she is friends with a member. We have taught her a few times and she is just awesome. She has the cutest little two year old daughter.  We have been teaching W. for awhile and she is ready for us to hand over to the Hermanas, she always flirts with Elder Kennedy because he can't understand her.  She proposed to him the first time we went was hilarious!

I am doing so well you would not believe!!  But my crown fell out...again...I have already taken care of it mommy.  Don't worry, I am a big boy now.  I've been to the dentist and he said he would call you today.

I'm really excited that HR is here (a friend from High School who is now serving in my mission).  I have not seen him yet, I want to though.

That is awesome that you are feeding the missionaries this week! It means so much to the missionaries to have members invite us into their homes. Send the leftovers home with them if there are any.  Also, ask them what they want to eat. Tell them that you have a missionary and to be real. Make them decide what they want. haha

I love being a missionary!
I love you all, gotta go,
